Hayward Community School is designed to provide educational opportunities for expelled middle and high school students, ages 12-17, who are referred from their local districts and whose behavior prevents them from being successful in traditional school settings in Alameda County. Enrollment is for one semester to a calendar year and may be extended. The program is a joint venture between ACOE and school districts of Alameda County. Courses offered include English, Math, Social Science, Science, Health, Life Skills, and Physical Education. The program provides classroom instruction that allows individualized attention, ongoing student assessment, and program evaluation, and provides group and individual counseling and mental health services. Referral to the program is through the school district of residence or the Probation Department.
The staff provides structured discipline and real life skills in an environment for seventh through twelfth grade students that is safe, motivating, cooperative, positive and collaborative.
